Chapter 14. Create a new mapset

A new mapset can be created by clicking the menu-items File . Mapset . New Mapset... or the items File . Mapset . Open Mapset... followed by a click to the New-button. After that a dialog opens as seen in Picture 5.1. The creation can be done by one of the following methods:
• circular search: Going out from one center-point the mapset will build around this with the here specified radius
• rectangular search: Two corner-points must be given so this method starts building the mapset with all map-images in between

Picture 5.1 shows the circular search. The center-point can be entered manually or by pushing the Get Current-button. This button causes taking the tracking-point from the map-image in the background (if there is one).
The radius for the maps to load around the center-point can be set with the slider-element.

The other method is to build the mapset according to its corner-points. The method can be chosen with the category-selection above the coordination-fields. The input of the cornerpoints happens by first defining the upper-right-point. This one can be taken from the actual map-image as explained in the circular-search. The other corner-point can be set by the sliders. The dialog differs from the circular one only in the fields for the location as seen in Picture 5.2. All other options are identically.

The mapset can be named by entering a description into the textfield. If there are characters in the description that are not allowed a dialog will appear to inform you about the mistake.
In the following option the map-server can be set (if there are more than one available). The image-size defines what size the single map-images will have. The bigger this value the less map-images will be loaded.
The map-scale-selection allows to fix the smallest and the biggest available scale.

Notice that a very small map-scale will heavily contribute to a large amount of mapimages. A value of minimum 1:10000 is sufficient in most cases.

The value in the selection on the right is dependent to the currently set value to the left. The map-scale on the right will always be bigger than the other one. At the same time the right value will maximally be four scales above the other one. Furthermore you can choose to start the map-image download immediately or later.

After those configuration the mapset first has to be calculated. In this procedure all needed map-images with their center- and corner-points will be calculated. Depending on the amount of needed map-images and the speed of the computer this can take a few minutes. To start the calculation you simply have to click the Create-button or Cancel in order to abort the creation.
